Something to think about

As the snow starts to pile up outside, there are a few things that are quickly overlooked. One of the biggest hidden dangers- tree wells.

THE photo contest of the YEAR

Red Bull is well known for pushing the limits of any sport it gets involved with. In 2007 Red Bull announced the Red Bull Illume photo contest. The contest brought out the best in the world. This year, Red Bull is again hosting the Red Bull Illume Photo Contest to find the best photos and photographers in the world. This contest is open to amateur and professionals alike and is guaranteed to get to world looking at you if you are in the top five of any category. But what if you win the top honors? Image of the year? Besides having the entire world looking at your amazing work you will also be given a Leica S2 SLR digital camera. Its worth a few pennies and is not even out on the market yet...

After the spectacular success of its inaugural edition, Red Bull Illume returns for a second competition. In 2010, the Image Quest will once again showcase the globe’s very best action and adventure sports images and honor the photographers behind them.

The Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2007 was the first-ever international photography competition of its kind. The best 50 images were chosen by a panel of photo editors and experts and were judged to have portrayed spirit, grit and edgy perfection in an outstanding manner. It was arguably the most dramatic compilation of action and adventure sports images ever assembled.

Now Red Bull Illume is back for 2010 and the submission window is now open: From October 1, 2009 until January 31, 2010 all photographers are invited to share their passion for outstanding images and extreme sports with us and submit their images online. Check out the contest section for all details and rules for submissions.

The categories for Red Bull Illume 2010 are culture, playground, energy, spirit, close up, wings, sequence, new creativity, experimental and illumination.

The winners, chosen by a selected jury of experts, will be announced in May 2010.

Fall Tilt in Telluride

typically downhill racing comes down to a 3-5 minute run. how fast can you push yourself to get down the mountain cleanly? well how fast can you go after doing lap after lap on a world cup course after doing so for 8, 10, 12 hours? what about once it gets dark? Yesterday was the second race of the 12hr Fall Tilt in Telluride. Riders pushed themselves and their bikes to the limits of raging down Telluride Mountain for 12 hours. Crazy? YES!!!

Hour twelve and the racers are still going strong!

out of our heads

People kept saying we were crazy for doing what we did. at times we were questioning ourselves as to why we were doing what we were doing. 5600 ft of vert on day one?!!!! sure why not! climb from 7700 to 13000! this turned from a bike trip into a test of endurance and determination. sadly weather and a terrible asthma attack on my part left us with little option but to dip out early. I am disappointed that we didn't get to finish out the full route, but looking back it is hard to be disappointed seeing the terrain we crossed. there is a really good chance no one had been where we were with bikes, ever. riding/hiking old mining trails that were used over a hundred years ago. traversing a ridge at 12500 feet with 1500 vert of exposure to the valley floor. there were several do or die situation we ran into. Not to mention the insane weather that left us jumping into an old mine. Hail and lighting at 13000 feet will make any man feel more like a little baby.

Would I ever go back to attempt the full route? Never! This was definitely a once in a life time experience. We were lucky to make it through unharmed, another attempt would simply be pushing our luck. Thanks to all over our supporters; WTB, Ergon, Bern and of course Banshee Bikes.

Linden Carlson cruizzzzing along at 12500 feet, with a little bit of exposure. it wasn't until we were across the valley until we fully realized the extend of the exposure of this section. riding along on a shelve about four feet wide with an 800 foot climb to another 1000+ feet of 40 deg slope. No falling here!

Just to make sure you all know my work is better then that check out this file, still small but shows the quality. Better luck next time i guess.

San Juan Love

Linden Carlson and i have been preparing for over a year for our up coming bike packing trip. Four days, unsupported through some of the roughest mountain Colorado has to offer. Why? Maybe because we are a little crazy, but mostly because we really like to ride our bikes. And we figure why not do it in a place with some amazing views. Our four days of pain and pleasure kick off this Saturday!

Linden on one of our food stash trips. We have three food stashes step up to help with weight. Special thanks to Jeff Kerkove with Ergon for helping us out with packs and grips for our trip!

What is SSWC?

Well our fine friends over at Outside Mag can help explain here.

But the real question is.... why do the Italians feel the need to host their own race on the very same day as the most amazing race bike fest in the history of no gears? YO NO SE! maybe cause they were sore losers at ms pac man last year. Would you like some cheese with those tears?
